So who is Catherine? Well I'm a little crazy dreamer with an overwhelming desire to make people happy. Watercolour painting is a way of giving a bit of myself to others or in this case, you! It might be through a painting or perhaps helping you to learn and feel great about your own art.
In life we never stop learning and so the growing process never stops - that's my excuse for being a big kid all wrapped up in an adults body refusing to dampen down this child-like imagination! It's the difference between being alive and living.
Born and raised in the UK, I was a living contradiction, chatty and a joker one minute then in the blink of an eye quiet and shy. Ok, so I didn't go to art school beyond A-levels, but I opted into the school of life running right through to masters!
I was drawn to drawing like a bee to honey from an early age and practised obsessively!
Maybe this was a crack in the door of insight offering a restricted view of what might come to pass.
Up until my move to Spain in my late 30's, I dabbled in and out of it like a child who wanted to experience the sea but didn't like the cold water - self-doubt is a killer isn't it? However my commitment to painting, (honest translation really means my commitment to myself) was reborn out of one of the most devastating experiences of my life, the loss of my Dad….cancer really sucks!
Painting became a way of working through my own grief - I didn't know it when I started, it wasn't even on my radar - I just picked up my paints and three little robins appeared on the page, my connection with him and they still are today. I haven't been able to stop painting since and my love for watercolours has grown day by day along with my skills and determination to master it!
Ever since the birth of the 3 robins, I've been doing art every day, even if only for 10 minutes, even if it's sometimes rubbish.
I've been creating, connecting and getting to know watercolours to the point of feeling like life-long friends.
Like friendships, it still throws out the odd surprise or two but I love spending time with it and it makes me really happy 90% of the time and really frustrated 10% of the time - I'll take those statistics.
Since 2016 I've been selling my artwork all over the world more recently through my online Etsy shop. I enjoy creating very personal commissioned pieces for clients including pet portraits and hosted several local gallery exhibitions along with the odd workshop or two.
I've honed my skills through making mistakes and practice, practice and more practice! I'm still 'honing' if there is such a word, we all are!
I hope that being commercial with my own creativity encourages you to seek out the art diva inside yourself and to trust that raw talent combined with learning and practice is enough to succeed.
I work in my little studio hidden in the Andalucian countryside near Cádiz where I live with my best friend/husband Glyn, the K9 kids Lola and George, our family of goats and happy hens led by Fred the cockerel. Having spent most of my working life in the world of finance, sales and marketing and more recently working alongside my husband in our property business, I finally decided to chase my dream of becoming a full time artist.
Poco Loco means 'a little crazy' in Spanish and felt like a very appropriate name for this adventure.
So what's next? Well I'm sharing what I've learned in a fun and practical way through a library of online tutorials which I'll build up over time, face to face workshops and painting escapes.
Thank you and congratulations if you've made it all the way down to here! You are clearly one who wants more... So I've created a helpful guide sharing information on what you need to get started and my 'go to' art materials I just can't live without. It couldn't be easier, just enter your email in the free download box below and the guide is yours. Plus, you'll receive regular juicy bits of helpful hints and tips as well as updates on all of the new and exciting things happening right here!
Who knows, perhaps one day in my studio we'll share our passion for art and will be rocking those paint brushes out of the park. I look forward to hearing your story and to welcoming you to Poco Loco very soon!
